RESERVATIONS
Reservations should be made in advance, and the sooner the better. If you're planning on canoeing or fishing in Canada's Quetico Park, a reservation can be made 5 months in advance. For the U.S. side of the Boundary Waters, reservations should be made as soon as you know your dates, and in February, March, or April if possible. We do get many reservations during the months of June, July, and August, and most of the time we can still secure the desired entry point, but there are times when certain entry points reach their quota and a party must then pick an alternate date or an alternate entry point. There is a quota on each of the entry points, both on the Canadian and U.S. side of the border. There are also some trips just outside the Boundary Waters where permits are not needed.
HOW TO RESERVE A WILDERNESS CANOE TRIP WITH OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
First, fill out the reservation form completely and indicate from which entry point you would like to start your trip. If you're not sure where you want to start, give us a call and we can discuss some choices. Next, fill out the food list.
Your menu should have one less breakfast and supper than the number of days you'll be out in the wilderness. Your menu should be returned to us two weeks before your trip is to start in order to help us get you packed. If it is not, we will simply pack our standard menu for you. Enclose check for the deposit and include in it the necessary fees for the U.S. Forest Service or Canadian Park Service so we can reserve your entry permit.
About two weeks after you have sent your reservation form to us, you should receive confirmation from the U.S. Forest Service or Canada that you have a reservation to enter the Boundary Waters or Quetico Park at a specific entry point on a specific day. ALWAYS check to make sure the entry point and date of departure are correct. IF NOT, CALL US IMMEDIATELY.
We will then send you a receipt for your deposit, confirming the amount and number of days of your trip. In addition, we will send you our Canoe Tips flyer with some pertinent information about canoe camping in the Boundary Waters and Quetico Park. Plan your arrival at our base the day before your trip is to start, and we will sit down with you and go over your route with you in detail. This gives us the time to answer all your questions, and show you a video tape of how to string a food pack, what a campsite looks like, etc. We will show you to your overnight accommodations, give you your packs for your personal gear, and after breakfast in the morning drive you to your entry point.
BOUNDARY WATERS CANOE AREA WILDERNESS TRIPS
The U.S. Forest Service is in charge of all permits for canoe trips on the U.S. side of the border. There is a quota on the number of permits available each day for each of the entry points on the U.S. side. When the quota has been filled, you must select a different day to start your trip, or a different entry point.
The cost to reserve an entry permit is $12.00 plus $10.00 per person, so please enclose these fees along with your deposit, and we will try to secure your entry permit reservation for you. We do need all the information filled out on our reservation form in order to secure your entry permit.
If you have more than 9 people in your party, an additional reservation must be made since there is a 9-person limit on all the campsites. If this is the case, we will need the name, address and phone number of a leader of each group of nine or less as well as an alternate leader. For your convenience, we will take VISA or MASTERCARD. Deposits are refundable, less $75, if we get written notice of your cancellation at least 30 days before your trip is to start.
QUETICO PARK (CANADA) TRIPS
Reservations for canoe trips going into Canada's Quetico Provincial Park should be made as early as possible. There are only 15 permits available per day for the entire south end of Quetico Park, so they go VERY QUICKLY. Persons entering through Prairie Portage will need a Remote Area Border Crossing Permit (RABC) which are $30.00 per person, in addition to the Quetico Park fees. It is your responsibility to obtain these permits (we have applications), as you will not be authorized to enter the park without them.
Quetico Park fees also apply, and there is a 9-person limit per reservation and per campsite. (These fees can change without notice.) If your party has more than 9 people, you must have two separate reservations since you'll have to camp at two separate campsites.
Please add the appropriate amount to your deposit if you'd like us to secure your reservation for you. We'll call Canada for you if you give us the following information: Name, address, phone number of the party leader; and alternate party leader, the date you plan on entering Quetico Park, the alternate start date, the number of people in your party, the number of days you plan to be in the Park, and the area you'd like to travel. If you have more than nine people in your party, we will need the above information for each group of nine or less.
